For years went through a phase when they were all under the age of 8 and hot dogs were the most requested menu item; it was a phase and it came back when they were all teens.

Years ago, my son Madden was obsessed with my neighbor Jamie’s Chili and Cheese Hot Dogs. I recently called her for the recipe and she literally couldn’t stop laughing; “Oh, Sandra how embarrassing but I use canned Hormel Chili and just normal all-beef hot dogs.” Simple and easy. I was like well I can manage that.

Then I remembered these hot dogs! I decided to surprise the kids and whip up a batch. It had been a while since we made these and they were so happy!

As my kids got holder hot dogs became a fancily dressed game-day meal.

Pair these pretzel dogs with homemade Honey Mustard Dipping Sauce. A delicious combination but another favorite here is cheese sauce; it works well too!

      1. Are you using raw bread or dinner roll dough? If not, that’s what you should be using. I just get dough from my local pizzeria!

  1. Love pretzel dogs. Wondering if you could leave out the step of boiling them in the baking soda or decrease the amount of baking soda? They were a little too salty. Recipe was easy to follow.

  2. What effect does the par boiling and baking soda have on the finished product? I’m curious — thanks

  3. Made these last night and they are so so so good! Very easy too! I used kosher salt on some of them and everything (poppy seed, sesame seed, dried minced garlic, dried minced onion and salt) on the others. Both were great. I did have a question – I’m about to give birth in a few months and thought these might be good if there was a way to make a bunch, freeze them and reheat. Do you know if these are freezer friendly and how I could reheat? Thanks for the great recipe!

  4. Oh my goodness, I need this in my life! I can imagine how amazing these would be with some beer cheese!

  5. The kids are going flip when they see these for dinner….I’m sure my husband and I might have one as well 😉

  6. I made these and they were great! Thank you! My question is can they be made ahead of time without the dough rising more? When I defrosted the Rhodes rolls they rose sooo much it was one huge ball of dough.

    1. Oh no! You can definitely just let them rise until they’ve about doubled, it may be more or less time for you depending on how warm your kitchen is!

    1. Sorry about that, it seems the rolls hadn’t been calculated in. It is corrected now, the total carbs is 12g per hot dog. Thank you for pointing that out!
